GM...tips for NPC hopping? Jan. 27th, 2005 @ 11:25 pm Next Entry
Hi all...I figured I might as well start us off.

I'm a first time GM in a WoD tabletop setting. Previously, I've played Vampire:The Masqerade on an off in tabletop and quasi-LARP setting for about 4 years. I have a pretty good idea of the rules, game background, and how to make developing, in-depth characters...but theres some trouble I didn't realise I'd encounter till now. The GM direction, description, and narrative comes easily enough

Its the NPC hopping I'm having trouble with...its like being told to take on 10 PCs at once, and engage them all on-the-spot, sometimes carrying on entire convos with myself for the players to listen in on. I didn't realize how hard this was for me until my 2nd or 3rd session.

See, I usually play characters with a very distinctive 'voice', whether this be an accent/dialect, or just a very specific intonation or speech pattern I have in mind. But now they're all kinda melding into one, indistinct, wishy-washy sort of dialouge, even in crucial scenes because I'm juggling NPC to NPC, which is proving dissapointing for me as a very character-driven RPer and confusing for my players (I've gotten alot of OOC: 'Is that Tigo or Sanders speaking'?)

Any hints for how I can practice or get better at this?

I'd recommend getting some other people to come in and help you with the voices. I read somewhere that bringing fresh voices into a game can be very beneficial
